The 7th edition of the CT Tens was held at Hamiltons Rugby Club this past weekend, an event which is the brainchild of Bob Skinstad and Robbie Fleck, this year’s edition saw 120 rugby teams and 15 Netball teams take part.
Seartec hosted the SHARP International Legends Tens Team and some staff and friends of Seartec at Royal Cape Golf Club on Wednesday the 4th of February for a friendly round of golf to kick off the weekend’s festivities. This game was great fun and a great warm up for the fun that was going to be had over the course of the weekend.
Thursday saw the SHARP International Team head to SAB for a brewery tour and beer-tasting before making the short trip across to The Toad and Josephine for their own capping ceremony where the 2015 player’s kit was unveiled. Team included Rugby Legends from South Africa, New Zealand, England & Canada as well as few SA cricket legends.
Hamiltons Rugby Club was the next stop on the agenda where the SHARP International team joined the rest of the teams at their capping ceremony. The SHARP International players were divided up into groups of three and auctioned off to the participating teams as “managers” and “coaches”, this was all done with the intention of raising money for the Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Players’ Fund. The money raised from the auction plus a portion of the total takings from the weekend were handed over to the Players Fund. But the evening’s excitement continued as Ard Matthews entertained the teams long into the night.
Friday saw the official start of the tournament,f with games starting at 9:15. The SHARP International Legends Team had a slightly later start, with their first game starting at 13:45. The extra bit of rest and late start clearly helped the team as they ended the day with 3 straight wins, seeing off the Numzans all the way from Maritzburg, the False Bay Crocs and the Masi Pumas. The Sharp International Team was the winner of Pool B of the Veterans League. After a long day the party moved from the field to the bar and stage as teams were entertained by Rivertones, Goodluck and Jack Parow, who featured on the field and stage this year.
Day 2 began slowly for the Sharp International Team as they had to come from behind with 4 late tries to beat the Goodwood Old Boys, 26 – 17. The next hurdle, the semi-final, featured the Sharp Team vs the WP Barbarians where the Sharp Team remained unbeaten. Setting up an exciting and much anticipated final, an encounter with the South African Legends Team.
Before the excitement of the final the Seartec VIP area was privileged to receive a much anticipated visit from All Black legend Jonah Lomu. Crowds were momentarily distracted from the action on the field to catch a rare glimpse of this rugby legend.
In between battling it out on the field , the Sharp Team relaxed in the SEARTEC VIP hospitality tent which was certainly the place to be! This was a place to relax away from the massive crowds where friends, family and leaders of industry got together to enjoy each other’s company and build on existing relationships while enjoying a drink and watching the some fantastic rugby.
The final was a physical battle but the Sharp International Team achieved a narrow 14-5 win to get their hands on the coveted silverware.After the awards ceremony The Kiffness, Kurt Darren and Me and Mr Brown entertained the 15 000 strong crowd till late into the night.
